Works from the "Yaralla" series are based on the building and
grounds of the historic Yaralla Estate, in
Concord Sydney. They
include images as diverse in style as the whimsical hand-coloured drypoint
"The Flowering of the Singing Tree" and the shape-shifting
etching "Time", to the large atmospheric
charcoals of "The Coach
House" and the watercolour "Mists of Time". The
unquantifiable notion
of time is also explored in this series. Time
seems to have stood still at Yaralla - horses graze in the
paddocks that surround the historic buildings. The clock in the tower of the
coach house is forever frozen
at a quarter past four. Standing inside
the stable at dusk, the atmosphere is alive with the spirits of the
long dead coachmen, grooms and horses that once lived within its
walls. The names of the horses still
hang above the empty stalls:
Captain Newsman, Limerick . . . These images combine technical skills,
representing reality as we see it, with a trans-dimensional element.
There is an interest in where the
boundaries blur, peeling back the
surface layer to find where everyday reality extends into infinity.
The
works communicate with the viewer through direct perception by
evoking a mood, emotion or feeling rather
than through an
intellectual response.
